패션 필름의 시초는 캠페인 사진 촬영의 비하인드 스토리로 부터 시작되었다. 그러나 불과 몇 년 동안 캠페인 영상은 빠르게 발전했고, 브랜드들은 그들의 웹사이트의 랜딩 페이지를 필름의 매체로 활용하며 이제는 스틸보다는 영상을 우선으로 컨셉을 잡는다.
최근, 몇몇 시즌 눈에 띄는 패션 필름의 경향은 현실과 환상을 연결하는 가상세계를 위한 디지털화에 본격적으로 나섰다는 것이다. Marine Serre는 2020년 봄 컬렉션에서 그녀가 보여준 미래 부족 사회를 재해석하기 위해 3D 디지털 작업을 택했고, Balenciaga는 '페이크'를 디지털화를 통해 그들의 초현실적이고 예언적인 방송 뉴스 작품으로 뉴스에 실었다.
